At Revert 95 we sell since day one an extensive collection of Obey t-shirts, sweaters, trousers, jackets, caps and accessories.
Obey Clothing history
The story of Obey Clothing is even more remarkable when you consider that the brand only exists since 2001. In that year, Obey made a modest start, led by artist Shepard Fairey. But Shepard himself is quite a while involved in the street art scene. In 1989, he made a joke a few stickers, which he spread himself and handed out among his friends. The decals was the image of wrestler Andre the Giant and the text "Andre the Giant Has A Posse". This sticker design would be launched later prove to Shepards global "Obey" street art campaign. In the early 90s the stickers were seen in cities around the world. In 1994, a judge banned Shepard no longer use the name and likeness of Andre the Giant. Shepard, however, did not throw the towel down and made an illustrated version of Andre’s face, bearing the words 'Obey', the logo which is now known as Obey Icon Face. Obey is much more than just a clothing brand. The message of Obey is about self-empowerment. By telling people to ‘obey’ in a sarcastic way, Obey wants you to take your life in your own hands and think about your surroundings. The clothing is inspired by classic military designs and work wear basics, blended with the iconography of popular culture, commercial marketing and political messaging. Together with designers Mike Ternosky and Erin Wignall, Shepard creates designs that represent his influences, ideals and philosophy.
Ideology of Obey
By visualizing ‘’Obey” onto peoples clothing with biting sarcasm (to obey), Shepard will challenge people to take their destiny into their own hands. But the slogan "Obey" is not only a parody of propaganda, it is also a tribute to the OBEY signs of the cult classic "They Live" in 1988. The Obey campaign is rooted in the DIY counterculture of punk and skateboarding, but also influenced by the imagery of popular culture, commercial marketing and political statements. These influences are also seen in other works of Shepard as the iconic 'Hope' poster he made in 2008 for the campaign of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama.
