Choosing a new skateboard isn't the hardest decision you'll ever have to make, but for some skaters, it's a close call. Beginners, in particular, find it difficult to choose the right one. With so many different brands, sizes, shapes, and parts, it's also hard to know where to start.

Specialized skate shop

The fact that skateboards aren't exactly cheap doesn't exactly help when making a quick decision. Still, it's best not to go to a toy store just because the boards are cheaper. These skateboards break much faster, and unlike "real" skateboards, the individual parts are impossible to replace. These boards are therefore a classic case of "cheap is expensive." Complete skateboard or assemble?

A skateboard always consists of a deck (the board), trucks (the axles), wheels , grip tape and ball bearings . The first thing you need to consider is whether you want a complete set. Whether you want to buy a complete skateboard or build your own setup (or have one built) from all these separate parts, a complete skateboard is often more affordable. The quality of the components in a complete set is also comparable to the individual hardware you'll find in our store. The only downside is that the selection of complete sets is slightly more limited. If you absolutely want that one killer deck or those awesome trucks, you'll have to build your own skateboard. This is, of course, also a bit more fun. Generally, we recommend beginners start with a complete set. Once you gain some experience, you'll have a better idea of ​​what you want and can choose the deck, wheels, and trucks you enjoy skating most.

Skateboard decks

Once you know which of the two options you're going for, you'll need to determine which size skateboard suits you best. This is where many beginning skaters get lost. But don't worry. As a beginner, it's nearly impossible to determine the right size and shape because you simply don't know what you want yet. Of course, there are some general guidelines you can follow. For example, there are special miniboards for children, but kids aged 12 and up can already get by on a "grown-up" skateboard. Not only does your body play a significant role in choosing a skateboard deck , but also the skateboarding style you envision. Street skaters with a lot of technical flip tricks under their belt often choose a narrower deck (7.5" to 8"). If you plan on skating pools and ramps, a wider deck is better for the stability. Skaters who mainly want to cruise or want to relive the old-school era can opt for an even wider deck (above 8.25") or one of our many cruisers.

Skateboards are for use

Whichever skateboard you ultimately choose, you'll have to keep in mind that it's likely to break sooner or later. Skateboarding simply isn't good for skateboards. And sometimes, skateboarding isn't good for your body either ;-) If you're just starting out, consider protective gear like a helmet or wrist or elbow pads. Accidents can happen!
